An Overview of Research Programs on Wireless/Mobile Technology at Weatherhead School

Prof. Youngjin Yoo

Weatherhead School of Management

At the Weatherehead School of Management, there are three main streams of research on wireless / mobile technology. The first project is a developmental/experimental project within a higher education context. We are developing several prototypes of mobile applications on PDAs to examine the impact of micro, local, and remote mobility support with various wireless/mobile devices on the learning processes and outcomes. The second project investigates the impact of mobility support on work practices and productivity level at a large global logistics company. Specifically, we examine how the deployment of Bluetooth and GPRS technology introduces various changes in work practices and coordination of knowledge, and ultimately enhances work productivity. Finally, we examine the changes in telephone industry as a result of the emergence of cellular phone technology. Relying on an in-depth institutional analysis of the disruptive change caused from universal wireline service towards personal telephony service that is mobile, we examine the transformation of the telephone industry and the critical role of standards in mediating between markets and technological innovation.
