Ubiquitous computing has emerged as a major technological force that shapes
and will shape our everyday lives as a result of rapid developments in mobile
and wireless technologies. From mobile phones and PDAs for individual knowledge
workers, to wireless medical devices used at hospitals, to satellite communication
tools used by astronauts in space stations, wireless / mobile computing applications
will become ubiquitous in our society during the next decade. We recognize
that this represents a major paradigm shift in computing technology and its
applications, which in turn will fundamentally alter the way we think of computing
for our everyday usage.
Therefore, we propose a university-wide research initiative for Ubiquitous
computing called Case Ubiquitous Research Initiative (CURI) to pursue large-scale
interdisciplinary research projects, to coordinate research and educational
activities, to increase the visibility of the mobile /wireless computing research
within CWRU, and to link better with the business world and funding agencies
locally, nationally and internationally. The initiative will work closely
with other initiatives started at CWRU to build centers of excellence in broadband
networking and telemedicine applications.
