We are developing develop a framework for “semantic-based” data compression that allows querying and manipulation of compressed data, and that provides significant storage savings due to compression. We have been investigating compression techniques that are cognizant of (1) query expressive power and integrity constraint specification of the data, and (2) feasibility and efficiency of query processing and integrity enforcement over compressed values. We have surveyed the database compression literature and categorized the existing compression types as to what type of data querying they allow. We are in the process of defining algorithms for simple data compression techniques that allow database queries both for database data and for stream data.
