Note to graduate study applicants

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. The following notes are meant to help you with the admission and financial aid process. In short, please, I would gladly read your application but please make sure that both conditions apply:
Additionally, it is highly desirable that you show research ability (i.e., publications) and that you have proficiency in Unix.

Here are some more clarifications.

Research Areas and Financial Aid

Currently, I do not offer research assistantships or prime fellowships in my group to new graduate students. If you are a new or perspective student and need financial aid, please do not contact me. Even if your application is strong, there are simply no more resources for assistantships or fellowships in my group. Please, contact directly the graduate office for information on other forms of financial aid.
The department maintains a list of active research areas that are suitable for graduate theses and for financial aid. Additionally, I maintain a page of projects that I am currently following. Please, refer to these resources to find a match in terms of a thesis topic and financial aid.

My Research Area

The following is especially targeted to perspective applicants that have interest in my research area.

I am following exclusively theses and projects leading to a degree in Computer and Information Sciences. If you have expertise or interest in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, please contact a faculty member in the appropriate field. If your interests are not in CIS, do not under any circumstances send me an e-mail - it will be deleted without an answer. It is often difficult to establish the boundaries between CIS and other fields, but, for the purpose of completing graduate work under my direction, I consider networking (e.g., TCP/IP) to be in CIS while communication (e.g., DSP, information theory, hardware) not to be in CIS. If your field of expertise or interest is in communication do not contact me.

In order to increase your chances of obtaining admission or a research assistantship under my direction, please submit the following with your application:

Reprints of papers published in major international conferences or journals in the area of Computer Networks (e.g., Sigcomm, Infocom, Globecom, IEEE/ACM ToN, and similar). Please, do not send papers published in national or regional conferences.
Additionally, I would appreciate any indication that you are proficient in Unix. My lab runs various versions of Unix, and if you are more familiar with Windows, you will have major transition problems.

If you have further questions, please send me an e-mail at vxl11@po.cwru.edu. If you would like me to evaluate your chances of admission and financial aid, please attach a short description of your papers, Unix projects, as well as GRE subject scores if available.
